You don't *have* to have gdb on the system in order to look at the  
core, sometimes it works and is helpful to move the core to a similar  
system in order to do the debugging. Back in the day, we'd take  
customers core files, that couldn't do gdb themselves, and backtrace  
them to try to get an idea of what's going on. It's not always 100%,  
but it might give you a clue ...
