[INUG-Users] SYSLOG Probe Question

Hi

The object server is not intended for archiving. The syslog probe will, as
soon as it gets a syslog message, parse it and try to send it to it's
designated object server. Once it's in the object server you would have to
have a gateway or some script to pull the data out and place it into a
file.
But one of the two modes of operation of the Netcool syslog probe is to
read from an ASCII file which has the syslog format - so you would already
have the data you seek in a file.

But you are suggesting that you have the ability to direct syslog messages
to a central computer. If that is correct and if that computer is Unix,
it already has a built in syslogd and thus the ability to save syslog
messages in an ASCII file for long term storage.
If that computer is Windows you can get a freeware syslogd or use the
Netcool syslogd for Windows (which both provides a syslog daemon facilty
and acts as a probe)
