Hey Daniel,
Yoni was talking about ANA and not Precision.
Someone asked me for possibilities or alternatives to monitor and manage
MPLS. I simply stated that this was possible with Cisco ANA as a possible
alternative.
What does Spectrum do thats so radically different from ANA? Both model
managed object behavior. Just like SMARTS. For that matter, anything thats
topology based has to model object behavior.
Object Oriented? Isn't a Moore or Mealy or even a Hidden Markov Finite
State Machine an Object Oriented "Model"? Even a Database schema is an
Object Model of sorts. Even simple boolean truth tables or Karnaugh Maps
orient themselves as Models of objects, simplified as they may be.
Someone was asking for possibilities. I gave them what they asked for. They
didn't ask me which one I thought was better or worse or took more hardware
than another or took more memory or disk space or anything regarding how
well it performed.
Sorry I struck a nerve.
Dougie!!!

We have actually tested precision with mpls in juniper and cisco routers.
we've tested ospf, bgp, and mpls vpns. we've tested cisco and juniper
flavor mpls L3 vpns and cisco pseudowires and juniper vpls. we've worked
with junos 7.6 to 8.1 on m7is and cisco 12.0(31)s on a 7206vxr and the last
release before modular os came out on the 7609(details on request). i know
my stuff works on those routers because i've set mpls up in our lab and our
dev team has developed against that setup and we've tested our releases
against that setup. we have not tested against cisco vpls yet because that
is some aggregate of pseudowires and was only supported on the 7600 series.
i'll send configs to anybody who asks for them.
i claim that is a lot better than waiting until you get to a customer site
and then figuring out why your stuff doesn't actually work because the only
thing you've tested against is some mib simulator.
OSSL
has this helped?

and why is that ?
what is so great about such complex, bloated system ... last few
installations i heard of, had a dedicated Sun 15K for that .
The way i see that, Simulating device behavior on a dedicated jre container
such as a VNE,
is not much helpful than just working with a database.

Hi,
What about Precision/Netcool ?
I've tested it in Juniper MPLS lab and it seams to work quite well.

All,
Can anyone recommend any other competing products to CA
Spectrum that are similar? We have NerveCenter/NetCool
and we have thrown out HPOV years ago due to scaling
issues. I have seen EMC smarts and I believe it is a very
similar product to Spectrum, but I am curious as to what
others think? We do have many other COTS products in
house that came with the acquisitions over the past 5 yrs
as well as many custom programs.
Specifically, I am looking to monitor MPLS
characteristics. Most of the gear is Cisco at the PE, but
sometimes in the core it can be Junipers.
